Vuillard is sometimes called an “intimist,” a painter of private lives and interiors. He never married but stayed at home, where he observed the gentle rhythms of the lives of his mother and sister. An air of quiet pervades the work. The form of his mother, a dressmaker, harmonizes with the drapes and furniture in her house. The influence of Japanese prints is suggested by the flatness and patterning. As he did here, Vuillard liked to leave unpainted areas in his work as a reminder of the underlying canvas or cardboard.
