George Rickey learned welding and became interested in sculpture while serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II. In this piece, two gliding, stainless-steel arms are engineered with counterweights and bearings and are powered by air currents and gravity. Although the blades always seem on the verge of colliding, they never meet. Rickey’s sculptures reflect his appreciation of nature and the aesthetic purity of his pursuit of movement in modern sculpture using technology.
