A friend and colleague of George Bellows, John Sloan was interested in the lives and activities of ordinary people, and he painted many views of the New York City neighborhood outside his apartment window. Here, he has captured the enthusiasm of a group of his neigh- bors, who, he said, were “filled with momentary energy to till the soil.” Sloan has captured the personalities of the three women in their behavior and dress, as well as the fact that their activity has drawn the notice of curious observers. By using a heightened color scheme of blues, lavenders, and pale greens, Sloan has evoked the brisk, clear air of spring.
