Camille Pissaro was deeply affected by his first viewing of Claude Monet’s View of Rouen of 1872. Possibly in consequence, he decided to go himself to Rouen in October 1883. For fifteen years thereafter, Pissarro and Monet engaged in a kind of “dialogue” of pictures of Rouen. Between them they produced several series of paintings that culminated in Monet’s paintings of Rouen Cathedral (1892–93) and in Pissarro’s paintings of the bridges and harbors of Rouen (1896 and 1898). This picture is one of a series of four industrial river landscapes that depict the same stone bridge.
