Medardo Rosso may have had no direct knowledge of the French Impressionists, but he shared their interest in capturing the fleeting effects of light, color, and atmos- phere. In 1883, he invented a novel method of modeling wax over a plaster core to explore the softly reflective surface of the wax. He discovered he could give the malleable surfaces of wax a texture that resembles the broken brushstrokes of the Impressionists. Here, Rosso has captured a transitory moment of light on a boy’s head.
