Gino Severini was one of the most original of the artists in the Italian Futurist movement. He used the fragmented forms of Cubism to express the dynamic pace of modern life. Here, Severini’s whirling dancer, composed of sweeping arcs and circles decorated with sequins, was meant to convey the sparkle and energy of Parisian nightlife. Severini dedicated the painting to Madam Rachilde, a writer who encouraged the exchange of artistic ideas between the Italian Futurists and the French Cubists.
